The first step to preparing an effective résumé.

A résumé is a concise summary of your skills and qualifications that match or are related to the position for which you are applying. Its GOAL is to convince the reader that you are worth interviewing. A résumé must do this in 30-60 seconds, the average amount of time a person takes to read it.

- Focused — identifies a particular type of position, field, or job
- Active — action verbs instead of passive verbs
- Brief — written in phrases and not complete sentences
- Balanced — Content and clarity are of equal importance
- Concrete — examples are specific (i.e., Managed budget of $3,000; Supervised four employees)
- Accurate — everything on it can be addressed in detail and proven
- Perfect — no grammatical, spelling or typographical errors

Provide a full description of your life with every job and experience listed Mention your age, gender, race, marital status, family size, or handicaps — that’s the law Act as a generic application for every position to which you are applying Use personal pronouns such as "I," "me," "my," and "our" Contain abbreviations (exceptions: type of degree, state names) List salary requirements and references
