Chemung Schuyler Steuben Workforce New York
Youth Council Program Grants 2001-2002

The Chemung Schuyler Steuben Workforce New York Youth Council has awarded funding to four area programs to support workforce preparation programs involving 448 young adults. Programs began July 1, 2001 and operate throughout the 2001- 2002 fiscal year.

Funding sources include the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 and Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF).
Grant recipients include:

Schuyler-Chemung-Tioga BOCES—$244,633 to serve 118 in-school young adults from 4 different programs within career and technical education programs. Also partnering on this grant is Cornell Cooperative Extension, Elmira College, Bethany Village, Family Services of Chemung County, Glove House, Chemung County Office of the Aging, Chemung County Probation Department, New York State Office of Mental Health, Elcor Health Services. Steuben Allegany BOCES—$390,000 to serve 130 young adults (80 in-school, 50 out-of-school.) Partnering agencies include ProAction, Steuben County area school districts, Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital, and several human services agencies. Contact person: Pat Kuhnen, 607-962-3175.

Economic Opportunity Program—$300,000 to serve 130 young adults (80 in-school, 50 out-of-school.) Partnering agencies include Manpower Employment Services. Contact person: Robin Crapo, 607-734-6174.

Catholic Charities—$208,087 to serve 70 youth in Schuyler County (48 in-school and 22 out-of-school.) The Schuyler County Youth Bureau will provide youth summer employment. Partners include Schuyler County Department of Social Services, Schuyler Hospital, The Falls Home, Watkins Glen School District, Odessa/Montour School District and Bradford Central School District. Eligible funding recipients may include educational institutions, community-based organizations, private-sector employers, and agencies dealing with youth ages 14-21. All programs funded through this source must provide services through a partnership that addresses academic preparation combined with workforce preparation. Eligible youth must be classified as low-income individuals with a documented barrier to employment. Programs are open to both in-school and out-of-school young adults living in Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties.
